You can also help out your teen by subliminally preparing them for the switch. Offer to take them shopping and buy them a couple new articles of clothes a week before school or the night before the big first day talk to your teen about the day to come. Simple aspects such as “where do you want me to drop you off?” and “do you want me to pick you up for lunch or do you want some change to go pick up a burger?” can really help your teen settle down about the whole situation and make some clear decisions about how they want their first day to go.
During their teen years, your child is also going to experience much more work and responsibly due to school then they have ever had before. In order to keep your child motivated and diligent you encouragement and assistance can go a long way.
Set up a calendar on your fridge specific to homework and deadlines and assign every family member a different color marker to mark up their weekly assignments and tests. This will help your teen stay on top of their assignments as well as keeping you in the loop about upcoming deadlines ( this can also give you leverage in planning outings and decoding signs of stress).
Attending your teens parent teacher meetings are also an incredible opportunity to stay in the loop about your teens education. The secret to having a successful meeting is being well prepared. Have a list of questions that you wish to ask the teacher about. Make sure to cover not only your child’s school work, but be inquisitive about behavior as well. Remember to go into the meeting with an open mind and listen to what the teacher has to say. Teachers see our children in a much different light then we do and can offer invaluable insight to what our children are like when we are not around.
